Automatic vending machines
ticket sales on Central Railway up by 25% in 2 years
MUMBAI: More passengers
prefer buying tickets through automatic vending machines to standing in queues
at counters at stations, said Central Railway (CR) officials. The sale via
automatic ticket vending machines (ATVMs) on CR increased from 5% in 2011 to over
30% in 2013.
CR sells nearly 9.5 lakh tickets daily. "It is an upward trend. In the past, booking counters at stations witnessed long queues, but now more passengers prefer buying smartcards and purchase tickets via ATVMs," said CR chief spokespersonAtul Rane. The automated system is being aggressively promoted and facilitators have been appointed to dispense tickets through the ATVMs.
"You will find more ATVMs replacing CVMs at all stations along the Main and Harbour lines," Rane added. Currently, there are 375 ATVMs on the CR network and plans are afoot to instal 300 such ticket dispensing kiosks. The administration has placed orders for 300 more machines. The introduction of Jansadharan Ticket Booking Seva (JTBS) has also cut queues. Under the scheme, the administration permits shops to sell tickets and renew passes for a commission. "There has been a good growth in ticket sales through JTBS. I am confident that both ATVMs and JTBS will replace CVMs in the near future," Rane said.
